Welcome to Echelon insurance

Echelon’s usage-based insurance savings program is available to Quebec Private Passenger Vehicle (PPV) policyholders that is 100% voluntary and free. The program collects and analyzes driving data such as acceleration, braking, speed, and distraction through customers’ smartphone device and assigns a driving score for each trip.

Customers can enroll in the program through their Broker. Customers can then follow these steps to receive a premium discount of 10% on their first year:

  • Download the Program mobile app
  • Activate the app on mobile device
  • Record trips using the mobile app

Upon renewal, a customer’s driving behaviour will be assessed and used to calculate a potential discount on their renewal premium of up to 25%. The driving behaviour data collected by using the mobile app will not be used to increase premiums. Premiums are otherwise subject to change in the normal course of insurance business operations and the discounts will be applied against those changes, if applicable.

* The program is a usage-based insurance and is different than telematics.

How does Echelon BonVoyage work?

Using telematics technology, the mobile app analyzes and measures driving habits throughout the year and calculates a driver safety score. The driver safety score aims to reward safe drivers by providing a premium discount up to 25% upon renewal. The app also sends in-app alerts, insights, and recommendations to help drivers improve their driving behaviour.

The app will collect the following data points over a 12-month period to determine the driver safety score:

Behaviour-based componentsExposure-based compentents

  • Phone usage: rewards not interacting with your phone while driving
  • Smoothness: rewards driving at consistent speeds, with infrequent rapid acceleration immediately followed by harsh braking (e.g., behaviour suggestive of tailgating)
  • Braking: rewards infrequent harsh braking
  • Cornering: rewards anticipating bends in the road and avoiding harsh cornering (GPS score setting only)

  • Distance: rewards low annual mileage
  • Time: Time of the day and day of the week recognizes that risk varies throughout the week and time of the day
  • Roads: Rewards highway driving, driving in areas with less complex road networks, and driving at consistent speeds
  • Weather: Rewards driving in good weather (GPS score setting only)
