Privacy Policy

Privacy Statement

Echelon Insurance (“Echelon”, “we, “us” or “our”) is committed to safeguarding your personal information. The purpose of this Statement is to inform you and describe how we collect, use and disclose personal information in Canada. Our Privacy Statement takes into account Canadian legislative requirements, industry standards and privacy principles. This Statement does not apply to information about our employees or to information that is not personal information.

What is personal information?

Personal information is information that can be used to explicitly identify you or contact you. This includes information such as your name, e-mail address, mailing address, phone number, birth date, or any specific information about you requested in order to provide you with insurance coverage or to investigate an insurance claim. Information that, by itself, cannot be explicitly linked with your identity is not considered personal information.

Collection, use and disclosure of personal information

Echelon and our representatives and agents collect, use and disclose personal information for the following purposes:

  • Maintaining communications with customers and brokers;
  • Servicing, billing and administration of policies and claims;
  • Underwriting your policy application including changes or renewals;
  • Investigating and settling claims;
  • Detecting and preventing fraud, suspicious claims or other illegal activities;
  • Compiling statistics for analysis of our business and underwriting research and modeling;
  • Performing administrative tasks such as accounting and information system activities;
  • Reporting to regulatory and/or insurance entities;
  • Notifying you from time-to-time of certain products or services offered by Echelon;
  • Responding to your inquiries regarding your account(s) and other services; and
  • Acting as required or authorized by law enforcement agencies.

Outside agents and representatives of Echelon that collect, use or disclose personal information on our behalf do so in compliance with this Statement and only for the purposes set out in this Statement.

Sensitive Data Handling

When handling financial and personal information the following 10 fair information principles (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA, 2000)) are to be observed and abide by all Company associates, contractors, and third party stakeholder groups. Echelon will adhere to and abide by the legislative requirements established under PIPEDA, 2000 for the purposes of collecting, storing, using, and sharing and/or disclosing personal information during the normal course of business. It is the duty of all Echelon associates to observe the IBC Privacy Code and PIPEDA to maintain the confidentiality of information belonging or relating to Echelon or its customers or obtained through a confidential relationship.

If you have any questions or concerns in this regard, check with your Privacy Officer.

All Echelon associates are expected to abide by and comply with these principles, as per company policy and legislatively required. Echelon Associates who reside in Quebec, Alberta, and British Columbia must comply with their provinces’ laws. Namely, Alberta and British Columbia residing Associates must comply with the respective Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Associates in Quebec are expected to abide by the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec. The Federal Government has deemed that these provincial privacy laws governing the private sector are substantially similar to PIPEDA in its core fair information principles.

In some instances, companies subject to Alberta’s PIPA which engage in trans-border personal information flow in their business transactions must adhere to PIPEDA for those specific transactions. For more information on Echelon Associates’ rights and responsibilities in these provinces, please contact privacyofficer@echeloninsurance.ca.

Consent may be given by your authorized representative (such as a legal guardian or a person having a power of attorney). Generally, by providing us with personal information, we will assume that you consent to our collection, use and disclosure of such information for the purposes identified or described in this Statement.

You may withdraw your consent to our collection, use and disclosure of personal information at any time, subject to contractual and legal restrictions and reasonable notice.
